I decided to share this in hopes that other's might be inspired to give this holiday season, whether it be monetarily or giving their time to charity. DH and I sent out a letter to our family and friends asking them to consider donating to those in need.
This is the letter we sent:
Hello Everyone,
Dan and I have adopted a family from the St. Louis Post Dispatch 100 Neediest Cases. This is the 3rd year we have participated in this wonderful program, and this year we are extending the invitation to you. We feel this year is as important as any since so many families have fallen on hard times because of the economy.
We have decided on a family of a single mother struggling financially to raise her 3 children (6 and 4 year old girls, a one year old boy). The young mother went through an employment program, got a job, her own apartment, and is going to college. She specifically mentions in her letter that " I will not be able to give my children a good Christmas and my personal wish is to put a smile on my children's faces when they wake up and see special gifts under the tree." This story touched our hearts. Dan and I have such fond memories of waking up on Christmas morning and racing to see the gifts under the tree. We feel these children deserve to feel the magic of Christmas morning.
I have already begun shopping!! If you would like to open your heart and your pocket book this holiday season please let me know how you would like to help. We should coordinate the gifts so we don't duplicate any. If you are not interested in shopping and would rather donate money to their gifts I can do the shopping.
We have always counted ourselves very lucky to have such a supportive and generous family and we would love to share that with our "adopted" family this holiday season. Thank you for your consideration.
Love,
Dan & Jessica
I am off to shop!! Have a great weekend!

Thanks for sharing this story! Next year I am going to keep my eye open for a local family to adopt similar to what you did. Typically, As we have already done this year, My husband and I chose 2 kids from our local salvation army Angel Tree. I have never heard of the family thing but would love to try that.
This is great! I have tried to find a similar program in our area and have not been successful! I am still looking though...
I like this idea! We usually try to adopt a family through our church & give them gifts & food. I must admit, it makes me love Christmas every year. I only wish that I did this ALL the time.
Thanks for the idea!
